SLJ - one is a snail and ten is a crab - step it up

Hey bloggers

For the step it up task we had to create new Zealand version of the book. 1 is snail and and ten was a crab. This was quite a fun activity but also challenging. Me and my sister had worked on this task together thats why it was easier.

Here it is:

Great stuff on this cool maths-nature slide show you have created for us all to see and learn from! I certainly learnt some new things from this and the maths element made it really fun and interesting. I also love that you collaborated on this with your sibling. That's really cool to see. It's great to get support and share fun and challenging activities with others.

From engaging in your work today I am grateful that I learnt that that type of snail is a powelliphanta, the small crab is called an amarinus and that spider is called te papa. I had no idea about any of these! The only Te Papa I knew about was the museum that I live near in Wellington - which is great by the way, if you haven't been to it and want to go and check out the nature exhibition there. It is really quite something!

Are there any other New Zealand creatures you are interested in? What are some of your favourites?

Keep up the great learning and sharing your work.

    Ruby

  2. Kia ora Hamzah!

It is Charlotte here from the SLJ commenting team!

Ka pai on completing the ‘Step it Up’ version of this activity!! I was thoroughly entertained by your book that you created! I love how you opted for native animals of Aotearoa! There is an amazing range of wildlife here isn’t there?

Nice job working with Asmah! In one of her blogs, she said that you have a sore finger! What happened? Is that why you two worked together or do you just enjoy each other’s company?

Hmm, I will double check on the name for crab in te reo… There is no ‘s’ in the te reo Māori alphabet which is why I don’t think it is amarinus…

    Awesome mahi, Hamzah!

    Ngā mihi nui,
    Charlotte :)

  3. Ka pai Hamzah. What a great idea to tea up with your sister. I love the kiwi twist you've given the story. I'd never heard of powelliphanta or amarinus so I just had to Google them! Thank you for helping me learn something new. I also love the way rua and kea rhyme, great practice for the poetry slam! Do you think you could take it a step further and translate leg into te reo?
